Stop using a leaking appliance and assess hazards
If the dishwasher is actively leaking, stop using it. Do not run another complete cycle just to confirm that water will appear again. Keep people away from pooled water near electrical equipment, and do not reach into the appliance cavity or handle a wet plug. A qualified person can isolate power and water where access or electrical conditions make that unsafe for you.
Take photographs from the accessible side of the kitchen. Include the machine, adjacent toe-kicks, floor seams, and any wet material in the sink cabinet. Record the last known normal use and when the problem was discovered. The discovery time is useful, but it does not prove that a hidden hose has been leaking only since that moment.
Do not assume the smell originates behind the machine simply because it is strongest there. Food residue and drainage problems inside an appliance can also produce odors. Conversely, cleaning the filter does not address a wall or floor wetted by a connection outside the tub. Describe both the operating symptoms and the building observations when scheduling service.
For a rental, notify management promptly and request authorized appliance access. Moving an installed dishwasher can disturb its water, drain, and electrical connections as well as damage the floor. A tenant's useful contribution is a clear report, photographs, and an account of ordinary use, not an attempt to pull a built-in unit free without knowing how it is secured.
Separate door, hose, and drain possibilities
Think in terms of when water was noticed, rather than assigning a failed part from the puddle's position. Wetting at the front during a cycle could involve the door area, but water from farther back may also travel forward. Leakage around filling and leakage during draining are different clues. Tell the technician about unusual behavior: a cycle stopping, water left inside, a change in sound, or a recent installation. Do not characterize water from a dishwasher as automatically equivalent to a fresh supply-line leak. Ask for the appliance diagnosis in writing, even if it is brief. The useful record identifies the failed or suspect component, the repair performed, and any limitations. “Dishwasher serviced” does not tell the person repairing the floor whether the leak source was actually found. Plan access with the appropriate trade
Before the machine is moved, decide who will disconnect it and how the surrounding kitchen will be protected. The installer or service technician should account for power, plumbing, mounting, and the available clearance. If there is visible growth or extensive wet material, coordinate the access with the person evaluating that damage. The appliance technician should know that this is more than a routine replacement visit. An initial opening may reveal more than expected. Agree in advance on a pause point: who photographs the cavity, who assesses the exposed materials, and who authorizes any additional removal. Follow moisture into cabinets and flooring

The visible surface can be dry while an inaccessible layer remains a concern. Ask for a description of what was exposed and what still could not be inspected.
Use a simple map tied to fixed features: rear wall, sink-side cabinet, opposite cabinet, front floor edge. If moisture readings are taken, have the locations labeled and ask what comparison materials were used. A meter reading is evidence about a measurement under particular conditions; it is not a mold species result or a complete picture of every layer.

That does not mean the whole house is affected. It means the proposed boundary should follow observed water movement rather than stop at the appliance's outline for convenience.
Decide what must be removed or dried
Material condition and water history determine the scope. A sound accessible surface may be cleanable, while swollen composite cabinetry or contaminated porous material may require removal. EPA's guidance on water-damaged materials separates material types and specifically limits its clean-water drying advice to appropriate water conditions. Do not apply a clean-water salvage method automatically to an uncertain appliance discharge.
Ask whether a proposed treatment removes contamination or merely applies a product. A spray alone does not restore a delaminated cabinet edge. Likewise, drying equipment does not remove growth already established on material. The plan should explain how cleaning or removal, moisture correction, and drying fit together.
Avoid blowing a household fan through a visibly moldy cavity into the kitchen. Drying needs airflow, but uncontrolled airflow can distribute debris from disturbed material. The appropriate arrangement depends on the work boundary and condition of the area. Have the responsible provider explain how adjoining rooms, food preparation surfaces, and the appliance route will be protected.
If the damaged area is modest, do not assume that the only choices are replacing the entire kitchen or doing nothing. Ask whether a base panel, side component, or local section can be repaired without concealing unresolved damage. A sound limited repair should still have clear boundaries and accessible evidence, rather than depend on a promise that the smell will disappear after the dishwasher is pushed back.
Verify repairs before reinstalling
Reinstallation closes valuable access. Before that happens, obtain photographs of the cleaned or repaired cavity and the documentation needed for the material work. Identify who has determined that retained materials are ready, and what remains to be completed. If a formal assessment protocol applies, its completion requirements belong in this handoff.
The appliance trade should verify the repaired connections and operation under suitable controlled conditions. The material contractor should confirm that the floor and cabinet work meet the installation requirements for the appliance. A change in floor thickness or panel placement can affect fit, and discovering that only after reconnection can create avoidable rework.
Keep the service records together with the water-event account described in mold after a plumbing leak. Save the appliance model information, repaired component, photographs before concealment, and any drying or assessment records. These are practical maintenance documents, not a guarantee that the appliance can never leak again.
After the kitchen returns to use, check accessible adjoining areas following ordinary cycles. A properly positioned leak sensor may provide an additional warning, but it cannot monitor every hidden surface. If wetness or odor returns, compare it with the original map and contact the trade responsible for that unresolved question. That gives the next visit a defined purpose instead of restarting with another general appliance cleaning.
