Color does not establish species or strength
Dark framing is not automatically a particular mold species, and a lighter surface is not proof of a successful repair. Lumber may have stains unrelated to current growth, while deterioration can be less visually obvious than a dramatic surface mark. Photographs help locate the concern but cannot resolve every biological or structural question.
The USDA Forest Products Laboratory's wood handbook distinguishes molds and stains from wood-decay fungi. That distinction matters because appearance and structural performance are different assessments.
